The We Love Scott Snyder And So Should You Giveaway – Week 2

Comics For Heroes’ mission is to get comics to those who aren’t able to get them on their own and promote everything good about comics.  We do this by getting your donated comics to troops overseas and those not fortunate enough to be able to afford comics on their own, getting comics to kids in schools, trying to encourage people to pick up comics for the first time, spreading the word about the good that comics can do, and the positive influence they can have.

Batman The Black MirrorIn order to spread the word and promote what we are doing, we are going to be trying something out and doing weekly giveaways for the month of March.  We love the comics of Scott Snyder.  They’re some of the best out there at the moment.  Since Scott has been so good to us, we are going to be giving out a different trade or hardcover of one of his comics every week for the month of March.  Last week we gave away Swamp Thing Vol. 1 and this week are giving away 2 copies of Batman:  The Black Mirror.  To be eligible, all you have to do is leave a comment to this post telling us why you love Batman or Scott’s comics in general.   Make sure that when you post, you use the email address option (which is the default) and not WordPress, Twitter, or Facebook.

This week’s giveaway begins today and ends at 12:00 am EST, Wednesday March 13th.

If this goes well for the month of March, we will try to do at least one giveaway monthly and feature the work of a different creator every month.

Some rules:

You only get one entry no matter how many times you post, so multiple posts do you no good.

You can enter multiple times by donating to Comics For Heroes via We Pay.  $2 donation required for an additional entry.

If you win one week, you can’t win again.

I have been been reading comics since I was 8, 9, or 10 years old (I have a bad memory). I fell in love with John Byrne’s Man of Steel series and his Superman was the first character I followed in comics. I am more of a Batman guy now, but Supes always has a spot near the top of my list. After realizing at a relatively young age that I would never be the comic artist/writer superstar I aspired to be, I had a short but glorious career in archaeology before becoming an IT professional. My passion for comics, while always there, reawakened with a passion after rediscovering my love of art. After someone in the industry did something really cool for me, Comics For Heroes was born out of a desire to share my passion for comics and bring the joy and fun that I find in them to those not necessarily able to enjoy it on their own. I have a personal blog here.

Snyder’s run on the Batman books has completely revitalized the character. While the current run on Batman with Capullo may be his defining run, the dual story he was able to tell in Detective with amazing artwork by Jock and (my personal favorite) Francavilla is what sucked me back in to Batman. Planting the seeds of what was to come with the Joker storyline and turning James Jr. into one of the creepiest villains in quite some time proved to make Snyder’s longterm run more fulfilling to me than Morrison’s.

  • Kyle Neice

I love them because they’re keeping me excited about reading Batman. For years, I read batman because he’s my favorite, not because the stories have been good, Now, that’s changed, thanks to Snyder and Capullo.

  • Alison Berry

I love Batman and Scott Snyder for the same reason: big sexy brains.

  • Jessie Ramon

I’ll be honest and admit, although I enjoy The Swamp Thing, I absolutely love Batman and I’m pretty excited about having a second opportunity to win a signed book from the one and only Scott Snyder. Batman, to me is The superhero. What he lacks in “super-power’s”, he makes up for in every exceptional human ability. I wasn’t alive yet to experience the birth of Bob Kane’s memorable character, but the impact Batman had on me years later as a child is something I’m truly thankful for. Scott has effectively reinvented this character and brought him back to life in the New 52. The current collaboration between Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo is nothing less than amazing. I’m only expecting more great things to evolve from this character as long as Snyder is writing for Batman!

What makes Scott Snyder so good at writing and especially writing Batman is he loves it! He absolutely loves Batman and tries his damnedest to create a good story for his readers and himself.

I have been a Batman fan for years. I like the fact that he doesn’t have super powers and relies on his brain and brawn (and the occasional bat gadget) to face challenges.Scott Snyder’s stores have been fine examples of that.

I’m a relatively new fan of Snyder’s as I started reading Batman with the new 52 reboot. And Batman is one of the few DC comics I read not because it’s Batman, but because Snyder has been able to create such excellent stories that I couldn’t stop reading despite my overall love for Marvel characters.

  • Keith Lehman

My first exposure to Snyder and I haven’t missed anything else he’s done since. Black mirror is one of the best batman stories despite no Bruce Wayne. Seeing Grayson in the cowl was awesome especially with jock and francavilla as artists.

I’m a fan of anything psychological which is why Batman is my favorite character. Out of any comic book character his is probably the most heavily involved with psychology, whether its his connections with Gotham or his relationships with his foes. I was always so intimated by buying monthly comics because I didn’t know where to start, but I actually started buying monthly comics starting with Batman when the New 52 launched because I heard Scott Snyder did such a great job in the final issues of Detective Comics. I’ve never read them so I’d love to be able to see the work that pretty much solidified how well he can craft a story, which is what he’s been doing on Batman for the past year and a half.

What I love about Scott Synder’s Batman is that he has re launched a deep physiological batman with a brand new injection or just raw excitement. He has made it far more than just a man in a suit beating people up (but still keeps that, as we all love it!!) and gives his writing such depth and character it really makes you think why is Bruce doing this every night? Scott’s twists and turns and subtle plot points really give meaning and characters extra life. It makes his work truely great literature even with out the art. Lastly the best thing about Scott’s work is that he loves batman! You can tell he really believes in the character. I heard him on Kevin’s smiths “fatman on Batman” and hearing his life story I truely felt that he puts such much into writing the complex character we all love! And that he is just a down to earth guy. I’m excited for the new 52 stories and his other projects!

I love Batman but am just now getting into comics (purchased my first one last week). I realize it is a little backwards to go from movies to comics, but it still counts! Batman is my favorite character because he uses everything in his life- his brains, his money, his torment, his skills- to better those around him. How can anyone not like a person like that? I would love to get another take on Batman to get a more clear understanding of the man behind the mask. Steve has a great reputation and with Jock as artist, this book sounds like it could be fantastic.

When Synder took over Batman he breathed new life into the character. He gave “Detective Comics” one of its most intriguing stories in years, aided by the fantastic art from Jock and Francesco Francavilla brought a depth and variety back to Batman that had been previously missing.

The thing that sets Synder apart is his strong background in horror and alternative story telling. The recent run of Batman has shown how he has taken elements of his older works, in particular “Severed”, and developed them to give the Batman books a sinister yet poetic edge.

When DC gave Synder the “big book”, Batman as part of the New 52 launch, there may have been some doubters out there, but he went beyond expectations as his plans came to fruition. It had been years since Gotham has been revitalised, and by introducing “The Court Of Owls” he gave Batman a new, credible villain that will hopefully be around for years. His work, alongside Capullos, proved that strong it inspired a spin off “Talon”, which just goes to show the strength that Synder added to the Batman mythology. The fact his writing was accepted by regular readers, whilst drawing new ones to comics is a testament to his talents.

One thing is clear that inside of his seventeen issues on the newest incarnation of the Dark Knight, Scott Synder has made a lasting imprint on Gotham City and its avid readers. In the same way fans of Swamp Thing will forever be regaled by his detailed tales and the conclusion to Rotworld will go down as an iconic issue.

With his return to horror coming in May in the form of “The Wake” from Vertigo, alongside a revitalisation of Superman in June, things have never looked better for Scott Synder, and I`m guessing from an executive point of view for DC as well. Year Zero in Batman has so much potential, and its intriguing to see where Synder will take it, but such has been his standard of writing, where ever he goes, like the Pied Piper of Batverse, the readers are bound to follow. It`s going to be one heck of a trip!

It’s simple. I love Snyder’s run because he’s doing a fresh look on a character that has been around for decades, and he’s being consistent on it. Every bit of Batman’s past is in there but with a grand Snyder approach. Think of it as having all the same ingredients but cooked in a different manner resulting in one new cuisine. Scott Snyder, the new master chef in town.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved Batman. I was 10 when Tim Burton’s Batman film came out, and after that I knew I would be a life-long Batman fan. I’ve been collecting comics ever since, especially the Bat titles, and recently started getting the collected editions of what, to me, are the most important/best Batman stories. Year One, Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, The Long Halloween, and so on.

Having read hundreds of Batman comics, I can tell you that Scott Snyder’s stuff belongs up there at the top with the best of them. Every Batman story he tells seems to be a big important event. He has an incredible understanding of the characters and what makes them tick. One of the things I love most about his writing is he takes Batman’s greatest strengths and turns them against him. Doing so creates some fantastic, thrilling drama, and as a reader it’s impossible to not get sucked into the stories.

Batman will always be my favorite superhero, through good stories and mediocre ones. But as long as Snyder is involved, the stories will be some of the best ever. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

ps. Thank you for the contest and for shining the spotlight on a worthy cause!

I love how Snyder has taken Batman to a whole new level and made it more enjoyable than ever to read.
